‘Throw’-Back Thursday - 2 Tips To Stay Healthy During The Season

Luke (college pitcher) returns to the mound after elbow injury.

For this ‘Throw’-back Thursday we highlight a college pitcher’s road to recovery and will provide 2 tips for staying healthy during your next baseball season.

Luke was dealing with nagging elbow pain throughout his senior season that caused him to stop pitching. At MVP Sports Rehab we search for the CAUSE of each injury, which leads to quicker recovery and prevents reoccurring problems. A big contributor and cause to Luke’s elbow pain was his throwing workload management and lack of in-season strength training. I kind of just gave away the two tips, but here they are - 2 tips for staying healthy during the season…

Tips:

1) Manage your throwing workload

2) Continue to strength train

It sounds simple, but can be more challenging than you think. Managing throwing workload can be tricky during the season. Just remember, it’s not all about pitch counts. We will dive deeper into this topic later. Something else we see at all levels is once the season starts the strength training stops. What happens is as you continue to throw your muscles are getting weaker throughout the season. Once the muscles can’t keep up with the demands of throwing an injury occurs. In-season strength training is crucial to staying healthy.

Luke worked incredibly hard during his rehab and was a great person to have around the facility last summer. We addressed his throwing workload and strength issues and he was able to pitch 5 innings in a game this fall! He will continue to train and prepare for his first college spring baseball season and now has the tools to keep himself healthy!
